This scroll painting “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” was created by Kano Sansetsu during Japan’s Edo period. The complete set is divided into two volumes, depicting the tragic love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang. The first volume illustrates the events from Emperor Xuanzong’s obsession with beauty leading to Consort Yang’s tragic death at Mawei Post Station. The second volume primarily portrays the emperor’s endless longing for Consort Yang.
